About Gaetano Geretto

Gaetano Geretto is Founder and President of Pelecanus Strategic Advisory Services Inc. In this role, he acts a strategic advisor, specializing in issues related to risk management, strategic management, and stakeholder management for the life insurance and life reinsurance industries in Canada, the US, and the European Union.

Before starting Pelecanus, Mr. Geretto served as President & Chief Executive Officer of Revios Reinsurance Canada Ltd., Revios Reinsurance US Inc., Revios Reinsurance International (Barbados) Ltd., and Revios Reinsurance Barbados Ltd. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of all four companies. He also served as Chairman of the latter two companies.

Previously, he served as President & Chief Executive Officer of Gerling Global Life Reinsurance Company, Gerling Global Life Insurance Company, Gerling Global Life Reinsurance International Ltd, and Gerling Global Life Reinsurance (Barbados) Ltd. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of all these companies and served as Chairman of the latter two companies. (The Gerling Group's life reinsurance companies were divested and rebranded as Revios in October 2003.) Mr. Geretto was also on the Executive Committee of Gerling Life Reinsurance, GmBH, and its successor, Revios Rueckversicherungs AG, the world-wide advisory group to the Vorstand ("Board of Management") in 2003-2004.

Mr. Geretto played a key role in growing the operations of the Gerling Life Reinsurance group in North America. Under his leadership, group profits grew to $12.1MM (USD) from a loss of $26.0MM (USD). Gross premiums grew to $395MM (USD) from a starting point of $218MM (USD). Market share in terms of in-force volume ranking improved from 13th to 8th place in the US and 6th to 5th place in Canada; total in-force volume grew from $45B (USD) to $150B (USD) in 5 years. The companies entered 2 new profitable business lines, two new territories, and exited 1 territory and 1 money-losing business line. He recruited and developed a strong senior management team which allowed Gerling to become an employer of choice in the life reinsurance sector in North America.

Mr. Geretto has worked on various assignments in the life insurance, life reinsurance, and employee benefits industries over the past 24 years. He was with Sun Life of Canada for over ten years before joining Gerling in 1997. At Sun Life, he worked in a variety of progressively more responsible positions within the Reinsurance and Individual Insurance divisions in marketing, product design, comptrollership, agency compensation, systems development and management.

Mr. Geretto is actively involved in life insurance and life reinsurance industry activities in both Canada and the United States. Mr. Geretto chaired the American Council of Life Insurers (ACLI) Reinsurance Executive Roundtable in 2001-2003 and served on its organizing committee in 2000-2004. He has also served as a committee member of the ACLI Executive Roundtable in 2000, 2002-2004. He also sat on the ACLI Reinsurance Committee and its governing Steering Committee from 2001-2003. In Canada, Mr. Geretto sat on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association from 2001 to 2003. He has served on the executive council for the Canadian Reinsurance Conference from 1997 to 1999 and served as chair of the 1998 conference.

In international industry affairs, he also chaired the Global Financial Leadership Forum (a joint venture of ACLI, EDS, and AT Kearney) from 2002-2004 and continues to sit on the Forum's Board of Governors.

Currently, Mr. Geretto serves as a Contributing Editor to The Actuary, the Society of Actuaries' monthly magazine and is also a member of the Society of Actuaries' Continuing Education Committee on Life Reinsurance.

He is a frequent industry speaker and has spoken at conferences in Canada, the United States and the European Union.

Mr. Geretto has also lectured in the field of employee benefits. He developed and delivered a three-day seminar, "Evaluating your Employee Benefits: Concepts, Costs, Criteria" at McGill University's Management Institute (now known as the Executive Institute) from 1986-1993.

He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree with a major in Mathematics from McGill University and is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries.
