Gaetano Geretto

Gaetano has worked internationally in industry in a variety of senior leadership positions, notably as President and Chief Executive Officer of the North American group of Revios Reinsurance, the largest of the life reinsurance operations of the Gerling Global Re group (Cologne, Germany), the sixth largest reinsurer in the world at that time. He has also held strategic roles at Sun Life of Canada, Transamerica, Prudential (UK), and Towers Perrin (now Willis Towers Watson).
In his career, Gaetano served as a senior executive at the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI) – Canada, the financial services regulator. He was recruited into OSFI at the height of the global financial crisis to bring financial stability to Canada’s insurance and reinsurance sectors. Gaetano headed up the life insurance and reinsurance supervisory area, advising on the design and implementation of OSFI’s revised Supervisory Framework. He also oversaw OSFI’s Actuarial Division, and launched OSFI’s Corporate Governance Division. Gaetano also led OSFI’s Insurance Risk Management area, overseeing the development of Canada’s insurance regulatory framework. He was Canada’s representative to the International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS) in Basel, Switzerland, serving on the IAIS Executive Committee and the IAIS Financial Stability Committee.
Currently, Gaetano serves as the Chair of the Climate Change and Sustainability Committee of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries (Ottawa, Canada). On two separate occasions, Gaetano was elected to the Board of Directors of the Society of Actuaries (SOA) (Schaumburg, IL, USA). He chaired the SOA Issues Advisory Council (the board’s strategic coordinating body) and the SOA Board Risk Committee, and served on the SOA Board’s Governance and Policy Committee.
Earlier in his career, Gaetano was the first chair of the board of the Global Financial Leadership Forum (Washington, DC, USA). He also served on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association (CLHIA). Gaetano also served on the American Council of Life Insurers (ACLI) Reinsurance Committee, the CLHIA Reinsurance Committee, the Canadian Reinsurance Conference Council, the SOA Reinsurance Section Council, and the ACLI Reinsurance Executive Round Table, serving as Chair in the latter three groups. Gaetano has also served on the board of directors of the North American group of the Gerling Global Re life companies, chairing two of the companies’ boards. He has also served on several not-for-profit boards and advisory
groups, as well as being involved in community fundraising.
Gaetano has led seminars on employee benefits & insurance at McGill University, on Mindful Leadership and Mindful Governance at the University of Toronto, and on Strategic Mindfulness at the Smith Business School at Queen’s University.
He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree with a major in Mathematics from McGill University and is a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries, a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, and is a Chartered Enterprise Risk Analyst. He is a graduate of the Institute of Corporate Directors’ (ICD) Directors’ Education Program (DEP) from the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto and holds the ICD.D designation.
